InfoWorld heeft de vier belangrijkste server-virtualisatie platforms vergeleken en komt tot de conclusie dat VMware nog steeds als eerste eindigt.

Gabe Knuth van BrianMadden.com heeft zijn eerste indrukken met Kaviza’s VDI-i-a-box 3.0 beschreven. Het aardige van Kaviza is dat het “out of the box” in staat is om meerdere desktopvirtualisatieservers (dus de hosts van de virtuele desktop machines) in een grid kan verbinden. Daardoor is het een erg schaalbare oplossing, die zonder veel beheer-kennis kan worden onderhouden. Zo’n grid levert niet alleen schaalbare CPU-performance, maar ook schaalbare storage. Dit laatste omdat er geen shared storage SAN gebruikt wordt, maar omdat de lokale storage van de servers door Kaviza tussen de servers onderling wordt gerepliceerd.
Op de servers kan zowel van VMware als XenServer gebruik gemaakt worden. Door de licensering van HDX van Citrix kan de user experience over LAN en WAN verder geoptimaliseerd worden.
De conclusies van Gabe:
1. I’d be interested in hearing how well Kaviza scales both upward and outward in real-life scenarios. It seems like the grid architecture is pretty chatty on the network, and that there might be a limit to how many hosts you can have in the grid. I also wonder how many VMs per host it can support. Not that I see anything that concerns me with the implementation. It’s more out of curiosity.
2. The Kaviza Gateway bring RDP only is unfortunate. I hope to see an update in the future (even if it means they have to roll their own gateway instead of using the TS Gateway) that supports HDX.
3. I’d like to see some sort of branch office solution in there. I’m sure you can add hosts to remote locations, but configuring your environment so that a) users get a desktop on a server that’s local to them and b) there isn’t much replication traffic across the WAN would be pretty cumbersome. If there was a way to configure one server at a remote location as the "master" to save replicating data across the WAN multiple times, that would be a big deal.

InformationWeek heeft negen VDI-oplossingen getest:
In de opsomming van de voor- en nadelen voor VDI geeft InformationWeek eigenlijk weinig nieuws.
Ook de vergelijking tussen de verschillende leveranciers gaat niet veel dieper dan bovenstaand plaatje, met als eindconclusie:
At the time of testing, we found Citrix XenDesktop provided the widest range of enterprise-level features in a single package. Since we reviewed VMware, several new features have been added that put it a neck and neck with XenDesktop, most notably image deduplication and offline desktop access. Ericom and Quest are impressive as standalone connection brokers. If you already own a server virtualization layer, you can’t go wrong with either Ericom or Quest. Sychron does a great job with resource and desktop access management and is on our short list. MokaFive surfaced late as an innovator in offline virtual desktops with centralized management features and security baked in. If offline access is a requirement, MokaFive should be at the top of your list of vendors to test.

Gabrie van Zanten heeft NxTop van Virtual Computer onderzocht. Dit is een type 1 (dus bare-metal) client hypervisor met bijbehorende centrale beheer-omgeving.
Gabrie is het meest onder de indruk van de hypervisor, maar geeft toe dat de beheeromgeving wellicht belangrijker is. Dit is ook de visie van Virtual Computer: hypervisors worden uiteindelijk een gratis commodity. Het concurrerend voordeel moet gevonden worden in enterprise-oplossingen met uitstekend centraal beheer. Dit verklaart ook waarom Virtual Computer zonder te blozen Citrix als aandeelhouder kan hebben, maar tegelijkertijd op client hypervisor niveau een alternatieve aanbieding op de markt durft te zetten.
Gabrie’s eindoordeel is in ieder geval positief.

TechWorld heeft de beta van Microsoft’s MED-V aan de tand gevoeld. Even ter herinnering, MED-V is:
Aan de server-zijde biedt MED-V beheertooling en Active Directory integratie. Op de client zorgt MED-V ervoor dat applicaties binnen Virtual PC zich met seamless windows tonen binnen de fysieke desktop. Dit maakt het geschikt om bijvoorbeeld niet-Vista compatible applicaties toch op een fysieke Vista desktop uit te voeren, alsof ze in Vista geïnstalleerd zijn.

Danielle en Nelson Ruest (onafscheidelijk blijkbaar, zie ook hier) hebben een review van de VDI-oplossing van Citrix beschreven op Virtualization Review. De conclusie:
XenDesktop, unlike many other VDI tools on the market today, runs with any of the major three server virtualization technologies. This makes it a clear winner in our book.
That integration capacity — plus its ability to work with differential images only; its use of the Citrix ICA protocol instead of Microsoft’s RDP; and its ability to pre-provision images — make it one of the very best VDI options on the market. XenDesktop is certainly off to a good start and should be part of the short list for any organization that wants to move to VDI.

Virtualization.info heeft een review gepubliceerd van VMware Infrastructure 3.5. Enkele positieve conclusies uit het rapport:
While virtualization itself highlights the new degrees of flexibility we can reach with computing systems, VMware Infrastructure 3.5 really demonstrates the endless potentials of this technology.
It’s evident that the platform is still at early stages for some aspects and there’s much room for improvements. Despite that the manipulation capabilities it can offer today are already impressive.
VMotion remains the VMware’s most innovative feature in this version of VI, but also newest modules like Storage VMotion, Power Distributed Management and Update Manager have good chances to become compelling selling points over time.
Punten ter verbetering:
The areas where VMware Infrastructure has to improve the most are the Guided Consolidation and the Consolidated Backup, two new modules which clearly demonstrate their 1.x version. Additionally, virtualization.info sees the lack of a true high-availability module as a major missing for such datacenter-class product, also considering that the market doesn’t offer many valuable alternatives today.
A last aspect that that created some perplexity is the VMware decision to include some features still marked as experimental. While the company clearly states that it doesn’t provide support for them and doesn’t recommend the use in production environments, they are available in the final code and many customers may fail in recognizing the risk in adopting them at this early point. Probably an experimental pack to download and install separately would be a safer choice for most companies.
