Microsoft’s Office Communications Servers (OCS) heeft een rijke functionaliteit. Een deel daarvan heeft een sterk real-time karakter, voorbeelden zijn video-conferencing en desktop sharing. Een OCS server-omgeving zal daarom vaak een mix zijn van delen die je wel, en delen die je niet virtualiseert. Dat geeft een extra uitdaging bij het kiezen van de juiste architectuur, rekening houdend met de vereiste performance voor het verwachte aantal gebruikers.
Om daarbij te helpen heeft Microsoft een gedetailleerde white paper uitgebracht. Samen met de ondersteuning van de “OCS 2007 R2 Capacity Planning Tool” kun je zo beter de verschillende keuzes afwegen bij het ontwerp van een OCS-omgeving.
Uit de conclusie:
Office Communications Server 2007 R2 can be virtualized for IM and presence, including remote access, federation, and Public IM Connectivity. You can deploy the following server roles in a virtualized environment: Front-End Server, Back-End Server (running SQL Server 2008 64-bit), Archiving Server, and Access Edge Server. These server roles were tested on virtual machines running Windows Server 2008 64-bit. The topologies that were tested demonstrated that an Enterprise pool running Office Communications Server 2007 R2 is capable of handling up to 40,000 users, including 10,000 Group Chat users, on a single back-end server running SQL Server. Group Chat Server is supported when deployed on physical servers connected to a virtualized Enterprise pool.
Workloads not supported are Voice, audio/video, Web conferencing, and application sharing. Therefore, server roles that support those modalities are not supported when deployed as part of a virtualized Office Communications Server environment. Those server roles should be deactivated when virtualizing Office Communications Server as they are currently supported only when deployed on physical servers. These workloads should be deployed on a separate Enterprise pool or Standard Edition Server running on physical servers.
