Michael Pietroforte heeft zijn eerste (speel-)ervaringen beschreven over het werken met een Windows systeem in Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
in deel 1 beschrijft hij het aanmelden en installeren van de server. Deel 2 beschrijft zijn ervaringen over het gebruik van de server in de cloud. Zijn conclusie luidt:
It is possible that I will use EC2 every now and then for testing purposes. The fact that you can rent a server for only a couple of hours can be useful sometimes. You just have to make sure that you don’t forget to shut it down when you don’t need it anymore. However, when it comes to more complex test environments I prefer VMware Workstation. You can create snapshots with just a mouse click, work with linked clones, you have virtual switches, and most important, you can manage your images with a powerful GUI. EC2 command line interface is also quite powerful, but I suspect Linux admins will feel more at home than Windows administrators.
I am sure that Amazon’s cloud will expand over time. But, in my opinion, at the moment it can’t be considered as an alternative to on-premise servers.
